Jul 26, 2007, Why do you need good quality fish oil?
One of my readers recently asked an interesting question.
"When ordering through the mail, is it important that the omega-3 oils are kept from high temp?
The bottles always say to keep cold, but when in the mail one cannot be sure. Would the high temperature during summer months decrease its value?"
On my website I refer a lot to the importance of quality. I am a great believer in the benefits of Omega-3 but it is important how it is manufactured.
The Omega-3 that I take on a daily basis is manufactured under nitrogen.
Each capsule also contains 2mg of tocopherols to prevent lipid oxidation. The oils remain very stable.
A short-term warming (such as during shipping) will not likely cause any degradation of the nutrients contained. Of course, you would not want to keep omega-3 at high temperature there indefinitely.
The manufacturers of my preferred omega-3 have explained that it is stored in their warehouse in a temperature controlled room. It can be stored out of cold/temperature controlled storage for short period of time.
On a broader theme a good supply of EFAs (Essential fatty acids) is absolutely vital if all our organs are to function at a comfortable level of health.
There’s just one problem: the body cannot produce them by itself. That means they must come from the diet, and today our diets are very much lacking in the right quantity and quality of essential fatty acids.
EFAs are what’s known as long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, which come from linolenic (Omega 3 Fish Oil),
linoleic (Omega-6), and oleic acids (Omega-9).
An ideal intake per adult per day is 1.5 grams of Omega-3 and the same for Omega-6, and getting the balance right between the two is also important. A healthy ratio would be between 1:1 and 1:4 of Omega-6 to Omega-3.

Jun 28, 2007, Atrial fibrillation and Stroke prevention
My mum has just been diagnosed with an atrial fibrillation.
What is an atrial fibrillation (AF)?
The heart contracts and pumps blood with a regular rhythm. The interval between each beat should be constant. In atrial fibrillation the heart beats irregularly – usually rapidly.
AF can cause blood inside the hearts atria to stagnate. Stagnant blood can form blood clots in the atria. Sometimes, these blood clots pass through heart, and lodge in the brain and other parts of the body.
One common complication of AF is a blood clot that travels to the brain and causes stroke.
People with AF are often prescribed medications to slow down the rapid heart rate such as beta blockers.
In the case of ongoing AF, doctors may also prescribe warfarin to thin a patient’s blood to help prevent strokes.
Slowing the heart down and thinning the blood – all sounds very concerning. Another reason to really look after your heart health whilst you can.
